Adobe Premiere Pro 4:2:2 RTX support is ushering in a new era for professional video editors. Adobe recently rolled out major updates to Premiere Pro (beta) and Media Encoder, including native support for 4:2:2 color on PCs. Combined with the launch of new NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090 and 5080 laptops, editors can now take advantage of unmatched color accuracy and accelerated AI features.

At NAB Show 2024, Adobe and NVIDIA showcased these innovations, joining over 100,000 industry professionals to spotlight next-gen tools for media and entertainment.

Why 4:2:2 Matters in Video Editing

Consumer cameras often use 4:2:0 color compression, which discards a significant portion of color data. While suitable for casual viewing, 4:2:0 limits professional workflows. The new 4:2:2 support in Premiere Pro offers a better solution—delivering nearly double the color data for only a 1.3x increase in file size.

This improvement unlocks several benefits:

  • Increased Color Accuracy: 10-bit 4:2:2 offers deeper color fidelity, enhancing grading precision.
  • More Flexibility: Editors gain more headroom for corrections, with cleaner results.
  • Improved Keying: 4:2:2 enables sharper green screen effects, better handling fine details like hair.
  • Optimized Storage: It maintains high quality while reducing file sizes compared to 4:4:4 footage.

When combined with RTX-powered systems, 4:2:2 provides a performance boost without compromising visual clarity.

Accelerated Editing with RTX 50 Series GPUs

Most prosumer cameras now support HEVC and H.264 in 10-bit 4:2:2 formats. GeForce RTX 5090 and 5080 laptops take advantage of this with GPU-powered decode acceleration. This allows for faster-than-real-time playback, smoother timelines, and reduced reliance on proxies.

The latest RTX 5090 GPU can handle six 4K 60fps video streams simultaneously, making multi-cam editing seamless. Adobe exports are also quicker, thanks to NVIDIA’s ninth-gen NVENC encoder and sixth-gen decoder. Exports to HEVC see up to an 8% boost in encoding efficiency.

Adobe AI Features Run Faster on RTX

Adobe’s AI features, like Media Intelligence and Enhance Speech, benefit from RTX acceleration. Media Intelligence applies semantic tags to video clips for faster content discovery. On an RTX 5090 Laptop GPU, it runs 30% faster than on the previous generation.

Meanwhile, Enhance Speech cleans up audio recordings by removing noise and improving clarity. It runs 7x faster on RTX 5090 laptops compared to the MacBook Pro M4 Max.

Adobe Creative Cloud’s AI tools now help creators work smarter, not harder—offering faster processing, real-time previews, and new creative possibilities.

Introducing Generative AI Workflows With NVIDIA Studio

Beyond video editing, RTX 50 Series laptops accelerate generative AI tools. Models like Flux run up to 2x faster with a smaller memory footprint. With up to 24GB of VRAM, users can create massive 3D scenes, stream in 4K, and render in record time.

These laptops also feature NVIDIA DLSS 4, Max-Q AI optimizations, and Studio Drivers. Together, they support over 130 GPU-accelerated apps and offer unmatched reliability for creators.

Hands-On Demos at NAB Show’s Creator Lab

Attendees at the NAB Show can try out RTX 5080 laptops from Puget Systems at Adobe’s Creator Lab. There, editors can explore AI-driven tools, test 4:2:2 performance, and get practical experience with real-world workflows.

Ready to Upgrade?

GeForce RTX 5090 and 5080 laptops are now available and represent the biggest generational leap in portable performance. Creators can use NVIDIA’s product finder to explore models and specs.

Adobe is also offering a free trial of Premiere Pro (beta), where users can test new AI features and 4:2:2 support firsthand. Visit Adobe’s website to get started.
