Nvidia AI demand returned to the spotlight after the chipmaker’s shares jumped more than 8 percent in after-hours trading, driven by renewed confidence in long-term artificial intelligence infrastructure spending.

Shares of Nvidia rose sharply after Amazon unveiled plans to invest roughly $200 billion in capital expenditures this year, most of it tied to expanding data centers and AI computing capacity. The rally helped Nvidia recover from a volatile week that had raised fresh doubts about whether the AI boom was losing momentum.

Nvidia closed the session up $14.20 at $186.08, after trading earlier in a wide range that reflected investor uncertainty around AI valuations and near-term returns.

Amazon spending boosts Nvidia AI demand

Amazon’s announcement marked a sharp increase from the $131 billion it allocated in the previous year. While Amazon’s own stock slipped modestly, the scale of the spending plan reignited optimism across the semiconductor sector as investors linked rising data center investment directly to demand for advanced AI chips.

Market participants say the size of the investment highlights both the opportunity and the risk facing the AI sector. Massive infrastructure budgets promise strong revenue growth for suppliers like Nvidia, but they also raise questions about how quickly tech giants can monetize such heavy spending.

Investors weigh cost of AI expansion

Wall Street remains divided over the sustainability of AI-related gains. Analysts estimate that major technology firms could collectively spend close to $600 billion on AI infrastructure this year, intensifying debate over whether stock prices have already run ahead of fundamentals.

Some investors have recently reduced exposure to high-flying AI names, citing stretched valuations. Others argue that enterprise and cloud demand is now strong enough to support continued growth, especially for companies providing essential hardware.

Alphabet ramps up capital investment

Amazon is not alone in accelerating spending. Alphabet has also disclosed plans to boost capital expenditures to between $175 billion and $185 billion, nearly double its prior-year allocation. Management says the investment is critical to supporting AI-driven services across search, cloud, and consumer products.

The message from Big Tech is increasingly consistent: winning the AI race requires massive upfront investment, even if it pressures margins in the short term. For Nvidia, that commitment translates into sustained demand for high-performance processors.

Chip stocks rally alongside Nvidia

The surge in Nvidia shares lifted the broader chip sector. Advanced Micro Devices gained around 8 percent, while other AI-linked hardware firms posted even stronger gains. The move suggests investors believe AI infrastructure spending is translating into real orders rather than speculative hype.

Industry analysts point to growing adoption of AI tools across cloud services, enterprise software, and consumer platforms as evidence that demand is becoming structural rather than cyclical.

Outlook hinges on earnings

Attention now turns to Nvidia’s upcoming earnings report later this month, which investors see as a key test of whether recent optimism is justified. Markets will be watching revenue guidance, order visibility, and management commentary closely for signs that Nvidia AI demand can continue to support premium valuations.

After a turbulent start to the year, the sharp rebound underscores how closely Nvidia’s fortunes remain tied to the spending decisions of the world’s largest technology companies.
